The basic lathe is a vertically mounted three jaw chuck that is precisely located with respect to a rugged, precision tool slide. The chuck jaws are actuated by a pneumatic cylinder. The tool slide motion is pneumatically actuated through a pair of hydraulic reservoirs. This air over oil arrangement provides the smooth operation and speed control of a hydraulic circuit without the expense of a hydraulic pumping unit. The chuck motor is powered through an Allen Bradley Variable Frequency Drive which provides the ability to adjust the processing speed of the chuck as well as braking the chuck to a stop to reduce cycle time of the system. All lathes are controlled using Allen Bradley Programmable Controllers.
MODEL 'K'
This lathe requires the manual loading and unloading of the sample by the Lathe Operator. A sample is loaded by simply opening the Safety Chuck Cover and placing the sample roughly centered on top of the chuck. Once the sample has been placed, the operator closes the Safety Chuck Cover and pushes the 'Start' pushbutton. The lathe automatically closes the three-jaw chuck, brings the chuck up to speed and indexes the cutting tool across the top of the sample. Once the cutting tool has been retracted clear of the sample, the chuck is braked to a stop, and the jaws are opened so the operator can remove the machined sample. The lathe then awaits the closing of the Safety Chuck Cover and the pushing of the 'Start' pushbutton before cycling again.
The Model 'K' Lathe supports the cutting tool with a machine tool slide that has 2" (50 mm) of travel. This slide provides the ability to machine calibration standards up to 2.25" (57 mm) long. The machine tool slide also simplifies the adjustment of the cutting depth. A handwheel with .001" (.025 mm) graduations is used for the final tool height positioning.
Standard electrical power requirements are 480/3/60 or 380/3/50 - Compressed air requirements are 5 CFM @ 80 PSI.
